What Is DTF Printing?
Well, good news...you can do it. And the tool? DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing. With DTF, you take that design, print it onto a special film, sprinkle on some adhesive powder like you’re dusting powdered sugar on a cake, and then heat it just enough to get it ready. After that, you press it onto whatever cotton, polyester, or blended fabric you’re working with and what you get is a design that’s crisp, soft, and tough as nails.
DTF Possibilities
Many people associate DTF printing just with t-shirts or athleisure clothing. Maybe a jersey or two. But that means they are limiting the thought of using DTF for textiles - which is not just possible, but also profitable. DTF printing can be used on many fabric-based products such as mousepads, baseball caps, tote bags, and many promotional textiles. Think of all the textile materials you could create for companies wanting to feature their logo on company and customer promotional items.Â
From home-based crafters to professional decorators, DTF has transformed the way we create and personalize fabric-based products. Let's look at the ins and outs of DTF technology, its benefits, and its impact on the textile industry.
Understanding DTF Technology
DTF printing is a cutting-edge digital printing method that allows designs to be directly printed onto clear transfer film for self-weeding transfers to fabric using specialized inkjet printers. Unlike direct-to-garment printers that only print to pre-treated cotton, DTF transfer can be applied on untreated cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics. DTF is a more versatile and efficient process than DTG
The Process of DTF Printing
- Print: Using a DTF printer, generally using CMYK+ white ink, the design is printed in reverse on clear DTF film.
- Powder: The print is coated with adhesive powder, usually while the ink is still wet. There are white and black adhesive powders available.
- Cure: The coated print is cured in a heat station or similar device for up to 90 seconds minutes. This bonds the adhesive powder to the ink and prepares the transfer for adhesion to the fabric (Use of an automated shaker combines steps 2 and 3 in an automated unit).
- Press: The transfer is placed ink-side down on the fabric (right reading) and pressed in a standard heat press for about 10-15 seconds. After you peel the clear layer off, you can do another press to "seal" the design.
- Peel: Depending on the type of film used, the transfer can be peeled hot, warm, or cold (depending on the film). Since it's a self-weeding process the ink stays on the fabric when the film is removed.
The Benefits of Using DTF for Textiles
Vibrant Output on Light & Dark Fabric: DTF printing allows for the reproduction of intricate designs with exceptional color vibrancy and sharpness, making it ideal for creating eye-catching and detailed textiles. With the accompaniment of white ink in the majority of DTF printers it allows your designs to have consistency no matter what color garment, black, white, hot pink, etc. Your print will always be the same and show no color shift.
Versatility: DTF technology is compatible with a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics offering endless possibilities for customization across various textile products.
Soft and Stretchable: Compared to laser transfer and some HTV films, DTF produces a much softer, more stretchable transfer that feels better and lasts longer.
On-Demand or Batch Printing: With DTF, it's possible to print small runs of customized fabrics on demand, or batch-print large runs for installation later. This is an ideal workflow for decorators who want to prepare a large batch of transfers to apply and sell remotely at fairs, sporting events, concerts, etc.

The Impact of DTF on the Textile Industry
The introduction of DTF technology has significantly impacted the textile industry, revolutionizing the way textiles are printed and opening up new avenues for creativity and personalization. According to Grand View Research, the global digital textile printing market size was valued at USD 1.76 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 3.87 billion by 2028, with DTF playing a key role in driving this growth.
Embracing Customization and Personalization
DTF technology has empowered businesses and designers to offer custom, on-demand printed textiles, catering to individual preferences and niche markets. Whether it's personalized apparel, bespoke home decor, or custom event banners, DTF printing enables unique and personalized textile products.
Streamlining Production Processes
With its efficient printing process and minimal setup requirements, DTF has streamlined the production of printed textiles, reducing lead times and allowing for quick turnaround on orders. This newfound agility has enabled businesses to respond swiftly to market demands and trends.
This venture can be a multi-avenue endeavor for your business. You can make shirts and take orders for your own business, but also sell pre-printed graphics or gang sheets on websites like Etsy.
